講題：The Effect of Media Manipulation on Beliefs about Inequality: Evidence from China by Brett V. Benson (Vanderbilt University) and Jidong Chen (Beijing Normal University)
簡介：Are authoritarian regimes effective at manipulating information? A formal model shows that efforts to manipulate beliefs about inequality might be effective even among sophisticated citizens who know information is manipulated. Cross-national survey evidence shows that media control is a source of misperception about income inequality. We provide further evidence from survey data in China that media consumption predicts beliefs about inequality. Our results address two emerging literatures. First, in demonstrating that media manipulation may be effective, we extend research that investigates whether authoritarian regimes engage in information manipulation. Second, recent work shows that there are gaps between real and perceived income inequality. We show that media manipulation is a mechanism for this gap.
